A Victorian sterling silver deck of travel dominoes. This rare, neat and beautiful deck of die stamped and printed cards has an ornate gilt and red Victorian pattern printed on the rear, and clear, large easy to read ivory and black printed dominoes on the other, framed in gilt. A smaller repeat of number design is also printed on each corner edge to make it easier to read when they are in hand.
The case is a sturdy, plain sterling silver with a piano hinged lid with a small catch at the front that firmly snaps into place keeping the lid closed when being transported. The case is neatly and ergonomically designed with mirroring cut down openings each side, allowing easy access to remove the deck. The inside of the case is gilt washed, still in tact.
The case is in excellent condition throughout. Unpolished with the exterior English assay hallmarks still present and visible on the side, along with the lion passant and date letter repeated on the inside of the lid. This is common where there are separate parts brought together to make the final piece to prove each part is sterling, and matching to the original design.
The hallmarks are for the English silversmith; Henry Matthews. Matthews operated a mid-size silversmithy in Birmingham between 1893 up until 1930 making a large assortment of household items, vanity sets and other such pieces. The set is in excellent condition, commensurate with age. Made in Birmingham, England in 1900.
